May 9th We were up a little late the evening of the 8th for a planning session. Once everyone arrived things began to unfold very quickly. May 9th a group of us headed to Naples for an evening concert with Randy Stonehill, singer, guitar player, songwriter and Mike Pachelli singer, guitar player and songwriter. The rest of our group consisted of Manuel Luz, worship leader, songwriter, teacher and speaker,Kirk Allen, drummer and previous experienced missions coordinator for Spain, teacher, songwriter and worship leader. This was a fun group. Easy to get along with and very funny! That made our two hour drive to Naples great. Our driver and his wife were unable to speak English so we listened to Randy and Mike tell jokes while Manuel sat in the front and tried to communicate with Vito and Chiara.
Once we arrived at Douglas' church in Naples we were able to have a short briefing time where we discussed what would be happening at the evening concert and the next day during the conference. Manuel Luz was our point person and under the cultural circumstances did a great job. I found him to be organized and very responsible regarding giving himself fully to the cause. I also found this true of Kirk Allen. The concert went very well. Many of the Italian Christians knew of Randy Stonehill and his songs from previous contact. Randy is an excellent singer and Mike a superb guitarist. The audience really seemed to enjoy the concert. We learned that most Italians respect excellence and schooling probably because they find it difficult to have those things for themselves. We discovered that many people do not grow up with instruments in their homes.
After the concert we had a very late dinner at an Italian restaurant that stayed open just for us. They made us the most amazing pizza I have ever tasted. The crust was wonderful and cooked in a real fired oven. Fantastic, but so late to be eating! After dinner we made our way to a hotel that had been pre-booked for our group. Vito and Chiara were able to stay the night also. That was a treat for them. They live in a evangelical tent community. More about that later. May 10th May 10th we woke to a continental breakfast Italian style. Different than American for sure. There were some interesting foods! Manuel and me were the first to make it to breakfast, he with his laptop and me with my camera. We had learned the evening before during dinner that the mafia controls Naples. Because of some bad decisions that have been made, there is no garbage pick up! BACKNEXT
