May 7th We (Willie and Melissa Saulnier)arrived at the Rome airport 11:58am and took the train shuttle to a central location called Termini. This is where all trains and metro A and B meet . The metro trains take you all over the city. Other trains will take you all the way to the northern or southern most point of Italy. At first we were overwhelmed at the traffic and hustle. When people tell you it is difficult to drive in Italy, they aren't kidding. My husband who is a professional driver did not want to venture out renting a car. That was a first for us!
The first evening we found that hotels near the Termini were booked, however we found one place that had one room left. It just happened to be the rooftop room! It was eccentric and beautiful with a slight third world feel to it. So hard to explain. There was marble everywhere and a huge bathroom, however the lights kept going out and the roof was strung with electrical cords.(hence the third world fell) May 8th I woke fairly early considering the time difference. I had a moment to ask God for our safety and success as we all ministered in a new and unfamiliar place. The birds were singing around 4:30am and I recorded their morning song from a rooftop in Rome. How cool is that! I am amazed at God's creation. I am also amazed at the creative culture in Rome. It is forgotten by the locals. Everyone in Italy is surrounded by the grandeur of old buildings and ruins from the Roman days, however there is a distinct feeling that the new culture has no hope or initiative to take advantage of their heritage. Very sad. Willie and I began our search for the apartment Bob Kilpatrick had pre-rented for our team. Our first search took us to the wrong part of Rome! We sat in a coffee shop and regrouped, took a train back to Termini and started over! Our feet were tired and we were aching from dragging our luggage around. (Something Bob had warned us about!) This time we spelled the name of our street correctly for a cab driver. We were driven straight to our apartment which is so amazing when you consider how many narrow winding streets there are with thousands of tiny cars going very fast mindless of road rules!
We found our room and had some much needed time to relax before the rest of the team arrived. That was GREAT!
